70 Years ago, the Constitution of Hesse was signed and the State of Hesse was born. On 1 December 2016, the Hessian State Theatre of Wiesbaden will be abuzz with activity as we play host to the "70 Jahre Hessen" Festival Concert. Keynote speakers will include Landtag President Norbert Kartmann, Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier and retired European astronaut Thomas Reiter. Excerpts from the matinee will be broadcast on television at 20:15, while a large firework display will take place on the Bowling Green at 19:00. The jubilee festival concert will be conducted by the State Theatre's new GMD, Patrick Lange. The programme consists of works, composers and authors of  Hessian importance: Wiesbaden-born composer Hans Zender, who celebrates his 80th birthday in 2016; famous historic poet and Frankfurter Wofgang von Goether, whose "Egmont" inspired Beethoven to write his beautiful incidental music (Overture and "Clärchen Lieder", performed by soprano Katharina Konradi) and Hessian author and revolutionary George Büchner (excerpts from Berg's opera "Wozzeck", based on Büchner's work). Further highlights include the overture to Engelbert Humperdinck's opera "Hänsel und Gretel", composed in Frankfurt, as well as excerpts from Wagner's opera "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg", written partly in Wiesbaden-Biebrich. Soprano Gloria Rehm will perform lieder from Goethe's "West-östlichem Divan", composed by Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say, while baritone Benjamin Russell will perform "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen" by Mahler, who was once Kapellmeister in Wiesbaden.
