The charming Mrs. Cheveley turns up at a high society gathering hosted by popular politician Robert Chiltern. Behind her pretty façade she is hard as steel: having become aware of the supposedly impeccable politician's delinquency, she knows just how to use this knowledge to her advantage. Cocktails hardly downed, she is already blackmailing the host, forcing him to support a dubious project in congress. In order to avoid a scandal and to save his political position and reputation, Chiltern retaliates with tumultuous cover-up attempts.
