The young lieutenant Anton Hofmiller befriends a local millionaire, Kekesfalva, and his family, but in particular the old man’s crippled daughter, Edith, with terrible consequences. He develops a deep compassion and attachment to the young girl and, through a series of empathy-fuelled blunders, becomes more and more entangled in the fateful relationship.

In his only full-length novel, Stefan Zweig masterfully analyses and depicts the inner crisis of a man who reaches the limits of his capacity for love, through his “weak and sentimental pity, which is really no more than the heart’s impatience”, eventually losing control over events around him, as well as his own life.

After the successful January 2015 world premiere of his Oscar Wilde project “Kill the Bugger!”, Thomas Jonigk condenses Zweig’s novel into an intimate play in which five extreme characters come into conflict and become hopelessly entangled in each other’s desires, expectations and fears.
