On 29 May, Wagner's "Ring an 1 Abend" brought the 2016 International May Festival to a brilliant close in the sold-out Großes Haus. No less than 22 000 visitors attended the 48 performances of this year's tradition-rich festival.

The 2016 International May Festival officially kicked off last night with an opening ceremony led by Artistic Director Uwe Eric Laufenberg and Mayor Sven Gerich in the Foyer of the Großes Haus. Festivalgoers can look forward to a month of awe-inspiring theatre, with operatic greats such as Matti Salminen and José Cura set to grace the stage, and visiting productions from some of Germany’s most celebrated stages – including Hamburg’s Thalia Theater, the Berliner Ensemble and Vienna’s Burgtheater – heading for Wiesbaden. For dance fans, there are productions by the Batsheva Dance Company, Ballett am Rhein (with a new piece by  Martin Schlepfer) and zero visibility corp. from Oslo, while the Youth Week towards the end of May offers a varied programme of international theatre catering specifically for children and young adults.
