Opera

Tristan und Isolde

Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883)
Opera in three acts
Sung in German, with surtitles.
Libretto: by the composer, based on the romance »Tristan« (ca. 1210) by Gottfried von Straßburg
Premiere: 1865 in Munich

"Tristan und Isolde" presents the love between two people in its most ecstatic form, perhaps like no other work in the operatic literature. Richard Wagner's music puts us in a "permanent state of intoxication" - as GMD Patrick Lange puts it - a type of "emotional borderline experience for everyone". But can such an all-encapsulating love as the one shared between Tristan and Isolde still exist in our society today? This is one of the questions director Uwe Eric Laufenberg tackles in his new production of this momentous work. Catherine Foster and Lance Ryan sing the title roles, while Andreas Schager will also grace the stage as Tristan twice during the International May Festival. René Pape, Tobias Kehrer and Young Doo Park alternate as King Marke.
