Mozart Double

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)
Sung in Italian, with German surtitles
Opera seria in three acts
Libretto by Giambattista Varesco, based on a French text by Antoine Danchet
First performance: 1781 in Munich (1st version) & 1786 in Vienna (2nd version)

Idomeneo, King of Crete, victoriously return home from war, but destruction pursues him to his homeland. In order to be saved from drowning on the treacherous journey, he had promised Neptune to sacrifice to him the first man that he comes across. Mozart's great choral opera is a study into a crumbling world order, in which forces of nature and war have to be overcome at great personal sacrifice.
