It all begins with a silly men’s wager to test the universal questions of love and fidelity, and – sooner than expected –two ladies find themselves in the flames of forbidden love. However, the ones who concocted the elaborate plan also quickly land up in the centre of the quandary they so masterfully created. The gentlemen’s conceit and the girls’ naivety rapidly escalate into full-blown deception and self-delusion, as they begin to play a dangerous game of double-crossing, every victorious conquest simultaneously leading to catastrophe. Overflowing feelings of love and guilt wreak havoc on the couples’ emotions even up to the end, and the question ultimately remains unanswered: once through the tricky maze of passion, convention and conscience, does one truly feel in harmony with one’s partner?

Mozart and Da Ponte’s psychological and musical masterpiece is an attempt to understand love and passion, without making any profound moral judgements; a true “school of life”, in which its graduates emerge a little more mature at the end. At the same time it also offers its viewers an interesting lesson: Opera not only has the ability to touch and affect the heart; while doing so, it can be deadly serious and extremely amusing all at once!
