A comedy which soon turns into a descent into hell - this is how Mozart composed one of the most profound of his stage works. The title figure seeks pleasure without remorse, and reacts with murder and manslaughter when the consequences of his actions catch up with him. While the idea of an unconscionable womaniser and demonic seducer used to be met with shock and intrigue, today the disquieting Don Juan fascination seems to have disappeared, playboys have become extinct and procreation has become an organised part of life. The final taboo in "Don Giovanni" remains the encounter with death, which no one can escape.
