Concert

Second Symphony Concert

Giuseppe Verdi Messa da Requiem

Each season, the Wiesbaden City Choir and Hessian State Orchestra join forces to present the great choral concert. This year, they are further complemented by the Opera Chorus of the Wiesbaden State Theatre, thus bringing together an imposing cast of 100 choristers and 70 instrumentalists on one stage. The concert’s sheer size is matched by an equally colossal work: the “Messa da Requiem” (1874) is Verdi’s setting of the Catholic requiem mass and remains the masterful opera composer’s most famous concert piece today. The work has also found widespread appeal outside the concert hall, with sections like the thunderous “Dies Irae” having found its way into films.

The soloists in this exciting concert are star mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova, known to Wiesbaden for her celebrated debut in the 2015 production of “Bluebeard’s Castle”, young  tenor and Operalia winner Ioan Hotea (Ferrando in "Così fan tutte" and Alfredo in “La traviata”), soprano Guanqun Yu (from the Deutsche Oper Berlin, herself an Operalia winner), as well as the Korean bass Young Doo Park, finalist in the Francisco Viñas Singing Competition (Orest in “Elektra”, Pimen in “Boris Godunow”,  Guardiano in “La forza del destino”, amongst others).
