Bacantes for the City Passage
Marlene Monteiro Freitas
Wiesbaden Biennale | PremiereCity Passage21:00 - 23:15
Wide-eyed androids with gold swimming caps. And a five-player trumpet ensemble playing disco-Satie and using music stands for unusual purposes such asrifles or bugles. From burping competitions and Madame Butterfly parodies toHitler moustaches, the outstanding Cape Verdean choreographer Marlene MonteiroFreitas leaves no holds barred in her celebration of high culture as a zombiedance! She will open the currently empty City Passage with a Dadaisticperformance, which is a necromancy and dance of the dead that is addicted tolife at the same time. Based on Euripides’ “The Bacchae”, Freitas will create acultic frenzy in the City Passage. In her version, however, it is not theinsulted god Dionysus hunting the upstanding women from the protective city, but all of us being chased into wild abandon on the dark side of Wiesbaden’smost beautiful eyesore!
