WIR 8

8th Symphony Concert
Richard Wagner "Tristan und Isolde" Overture
Franz Schreker "Nachtstück" from the opera "Der ferne Klang"
Arnold Schönberg "Pelleas und Melisande"

Wiesbaden is a true Art Nouveau city and the beautiful Friedrich-von-Thiersch Hall in the Kurhaus is an excellent example of the architecture of this stylistic era at the turn of the 19th/20th century. Art Nouveau celebrated the natural cycles of nature: curved lines, decorative ornamentations of plant and animal motifs adorn the artworks and furniture designs of the time. The artists of the Art Nouveau also took their inspiration from the courtly knight's tales of the Middle Ages, to which the story of Pelleas and Melisande - one which has been set to music by various composers - also belongs.

The final concert of the symphony season is once again conducted by Patrick Lange and focuses on Arnold Schönberg's Pelleas composition, one of the last works form the composer's tonal period. The concert also marks the opening of Wiesbaden Museum's 2019 Art Nouveau year, on the occasion of the opening of its Art Nouveau exhibition.
