Mr Otis, the American emissary in London, purchases a British castle and moves in with his family. Unfortunately the castle has been haunted by the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville for many years. However, the open-minded Americans do not take the ghost stories seriously.

Mrs. Otis unceremoniously cleans away the blood stain which could not be removed for centuries and the youngsters in the family all too quickly start entertaining themselves as the "terrors of the house". Meanwhile, the ghost becomes increasingly offended by the fact that the family simply won't be scared. Only Virginia, the daughter of the Americans, takes pity on him and has the strength to free the dejected Sir Simon from his curse.
