We all know them, those people whose only topics of conversation revolve around their illnesses, whose social contacts are almost exclusively doctors and pharmacists; yet they go through life alive and kicking. Molière created the prototype hypochondriac three and a half centuries ago in his comedy "The Imaginary Invalid": his name is Argan and he adores his doctors. They, in turn, regard him as a mere cash cow, prescribing him expensive and less than helpful treatments. Argan becomes downright euphoric when the chance comes along to welcome a doctor into his own family. But for this to happen, his daughter must make haste up and marry the doctor; unfortunately, Angélique is in no hurry to do so. To make Argan see reason, it seems shock therapy would be the best course of action.

"The Imaginary Invalid" was to be Molière's last piece and it was not without its own tragedy: the author, who also played the lead role himself, suffered from a dizzy spell in the forth performance and died, in costume, soon thereafter.
