Johannes Martin Kränzle

Johannes Martin Kränzle is one of the most versatile performers of his generation. He studied music theatre directing in Hamburg and singing in Frankfurt. In recent years, he has enjoyed great success in Wagner roles, including Klingsor ("Parsifal") at Teatro Real in Madrid in 2013. In 2014, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in the role of Sixtus Beckmesser ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg"), followed by guest appearances at London's Royal Opera House and the Bayreuth Festival in 2017. He has sung Alberich ("Der Ring des Nibelungen") at the Berlin State Opera, as well as La Scala in Milan, the BBC Proms in London, the Lucerne Festival, the Whitsun Festival in Baden-Baden, and the Royal Opera House in London. He is also a regular guest in Paris, Zurich, Geneva, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, San Francisco, Tel Aviv and Tokyo. As a long-time ensemble member of the Opera Frankfurt, he has performed roles such as Papageno ("Die Zauberflöte"), Don Giovanni, Don Alfonso ("Così fan tutte"), Paolo Albiani ("Simon Boccanegra"), Giovanni Morone ("Palestrina"), Dandini ("La Cenerentola"), Baron Prus ("The Makropulos Affair") and Gloster (Reimann's "Lear"). He has made guest appearances at the festivals in Salzburg (Nietzsche in the world premiere of Rihm's "Dionysos", Don Alfonso in "Così fan tutte"), Bregenz and Glyndebourne, and made his Paris debut in 2017 as Wozzeck. Important roles in Wiesbaden include Count Almaviva ("Le nozze di Figaro") and Beckmesser ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg") at the International May Festival, as well as Papageno, Bluebeard ("Bluebeard's Castle") and Šiškov ("From the House of the Dead").
