Es begab sich aber zu der Zeit
And it came to pass in those days...
Theatre project by Thomas Jonigk
Modern Europe, with its spiritual and cultural roots, rests on the heritage of classical antiquity and Christianity. The New Testament and particularly the Gospels, which chronicle the life, miracles, death and resurrection of Christ, take a central position within this context. Non-violence, benevolence and love are still the watchwords of the day – also for non-religious people – while other key terms such as grace, forgiveness, reconciliation, mercy and human responsibility seem to have been tainted with rather an obscure, musty aftertaste in the face of an afterlife.
Author-director Thomas Jonigk attempts to reclaim these terms: the project aims to discover how central these principles really are in our increasingly violent, vengeful, self-righteous and religiously fanatic here and now.
