Vasily Barkhatov was born in Moscow. His work as director has taken him to the Mariinski Theatre in St. Petersburg (“Jenůfa”, “Tales of Hoffmann”, “Rusalka” and “Otello”), the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (“Die Fledermaus”), Theater an der Wien, as well as Riga (“Eugene Onegin”) and Mannheim (“La damnation de Faust”). In 2013/14 he was artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg, where he directed “Der fliegende Holländer”, amongst others. During autumn 2015, he inaugurated the new artistic directorship at Theater Basel with Mussorgsky’s “Khovanshchina”. After directing Zimmermann's "Die Soldaten" at the 2015 International May Festival, he returns this season to direct "Eugene Onegin".
