Der Glöckner von Notre Dame
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
By Ulrich Zaum, after Victor Hugo
Co-production with Theater Rayo
Performed in German
Victor Hugo's masterpiece "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" (French: "Notre-Dame de Paris") shows man in his noblest and lowest form. Archdeacon Claude Frollo is torn between his obsessive lust for the gypsy girl Esmeralda and the rules of the Notre Dame Cathedral. He orders Quasimodo to kidnap her, but the hunchback is captured by Phoebus and his guards, who save Esmeralda. Gringoire, who attempted to help Esmeralda but was knocked out by Quasimodo, is about to be hanged by beggars when Esmeralda saves him by agreeing to marry him for four years.
A fantastical murder ballad of love, devilish monsters and death, a grotesque spectacle with puppets at at once so beautiful and hideous, it is as if Victor Hugo had sketched them himself.
