Lohengrin: Unterwegs mit Schwan!
Lohengrin: en route with Swan!
by Katrin Lange
Based on medieval epic poems of Wolfram von Eschenbach & Konrad von Würzburg
Performed in German
Lohengrin likes to follow his own head and struggles to obey the wishes and instructions of his father, Grail Knight Parzival. The latter strongly believes in tradition, order and the eternal vow to always stand up for justice. In contrast, Lohengrin dreams of independence, freedom and adventure. But the two do not need to be mutually exclusive, because in distant Brabant, peril awaits and Princess Elsa is in desperate need of assistance. Imprisoned by the Emperor and Duke, she is to be killed or married off to her uncle (the Duke), so that she is unable to claim her father’s inheritance. Luckily knights do still exist, and so Lohengrin gets ready to fight, with sword – and a swan – by his side.
There are decisions to be made: do some situations warrant throwing rules overboard and forging one’s own plan? The piece cleverly and amusingly challenges tradition, and there is no singing....or is there?
