Franz Kafka’s famous “Brief an den Vater” (Letter to my Father) begins: “Dearest Father, you asked me recently why I maintain that I am afraid of you”. Quite at home amongst his main body of work, this fascinating autobiographical document and literary masterpiece alludes to a highly complicated relationship. In “Die Verwandlung” (The Metamorphosis) – arguably Kafka’s most well-known work – Gregor Samsa, a young travelling salesman, wakes to find himself transformed into a large, monstrous insect-like creature, unexpectedly becoming a threat and enemy to his family.  In “Amerika” a teenage boy is sent abroad to escape the scandal of a youthful transgression, and in “Der Prozess” (The Trial) Josef K. waits in vain for help from his relatives. Family structures – or the conspicuous absence thereof – seem to play a decisive, often tragic role in much of Kafka’s oeuvre.

Known for his equally intelligent and entertaining textual excursions, Jan Philipp Gloger puts this interesting trait of Kafka’s writing under the microscope, and invites you on a journey through the time, life and works of one of the 20th century’s most significant authors.
