The historical novels of Sir Walter Scott were the most widely read books during the heyday of Romanticism.

Max Emanuel Cencic, one of the leading counter-tenors of our time, takes on a double-role in "La Donna del Lago", both directing and starring in the role of Malcolm Groeme, the melodramatic lover. In Cencic's opulent production, Elena, immersed in a novel, dreams of a life beyond the armchair of her upper middle-class salon life and transmits herself into a monumental, gilt-framed painting filled with naturalism, eroticism, love and emotional conflict. In addition to Cencic as Malcolm, young Russian star mezzo Lena Belkina takes on the demanding title role, while Daniel Behle sings the multi-faceted King James V, before his David in "Meistersinger" on 30 May. The orchestra of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb is conducted by Grammy-nominated Echo Klassik prize-winner George Petrou.
