Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo

Emilio de’Cavalieri (1550 – 1602)
Libretto: Agostino Manni
First performance: 1600 in Rome
Performed in Italian

Ensemble Mattiacis is known for its performances of rarely-performed Baroque operas. Emilio de'Cavalieri fused the musical splendour of the Renaissance with the newly emerging sounds of opera. In a mixture of mystery play and world theatre, allegoric figures march along to a contest. Which one provides the most fulfilled life: a life of spiritual devotion to God or one of seductive earthly pleasures?
