Reineke Fuchs

oder Wie die Politik in die Welt kam
by Ulrich Zaum
Performed in German

Before the fox stepped onto the stage, the world functioned according to clear-cut rules: the weak serve or get eaten, while the strong rule the world. The fox brings turmoil to this fixed order because he is a player and a close watcher. His material? Vanity, envy, greed, the ardent desire for recognition, the fear of the powerful. From his vantage point, the fox develops a unique strategy: politics as a game of deception and manipulation, as an instrument of power - a theatre of false emotions and meanings, serving to build a facade of reality behind which one can pursue one's own interests undisturbed. The means which Reineke Fuchs invents and employs for this purpose have remained roughly the same from Machiavelli to Berlusconi, from Putin to Trump.
