Spanish extreme performer Angélica Liddell is a phenomenon of European theatre. To her, there is no division between life and art, and she regards herself an art figure and private individual at the same time. Not shying away from self-harm or controversy, her radical physical performance arts reflects on the inner sufferings and violence of the world and has caused an international sensation since her invitation to the Avignon Festival ten years ago.

For her latest offering, "The Scarlet Letter", Angélica Liddell drew inspiration from Nathaniel Hawthorne's famous 19th century novel by the same name, in which an adulteress in a Puritan society is forced to wear a scarlet A on breast.  Liddell still sees Puritanism at work today and opposes it vehemently.

The International May Festival dedicates the invitation of "The Scarlet Letter" to the late Maria Magdalena Ludewig, co-director of the Wiesbaden Biennale, who died in a tragic accident on 31 December 2018.
