Evelyn Herlitzius

Evelyn Herlitzius is one of the most noted dramatic sopranos of our time. She was born in Osnabrück and received her vocal training at the Hamburg School of Music and Theatre. She made her debut as Leonore ("Fidelio") at the Dresden Staatsoper and has since appeared at some of the leading opera houses of the world, including the Staatsoper Berlin, in Munich, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Vienna, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (the complete "Ring" cycle), the Netherlands National Opera in Amsterdam (Kostelnicka in "Jenufa"), the Opéra National de Paris (Ortrud in "Lohengrin"), the Teatro alla Scala di Milano (Katerina Izmaylova in "Lady Macbeth of Mzensk", Marie in "Wozzeck", Ortrud in "Lohengrin") and the Zurich Opera House. In 2018 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York as Kundry ("Parsifal").

Sir Simon Rattle engaged her for Schönberg's "Erwartung" with the Berlin Philharmonic for concerts in Berlin and New York, and she has worked with Pierre Boulez and the Vienna Philharmonic.

Evelyn Herlitzius has worked with many important conductors and stage directors including Sir Georg Solti, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Daniel Barenboim, Daniele Gatti, Adam Fischer, Sir Simon Rattle, Christian Thielemann, Sir Donald Runnicles, Fabio Luisi, Kent Nagano, Willy Decker, Jürgen Flimm, Andreas Homoki, Harry Kupfer, Christof Loy, Hans Neuenfels and Christoph Schlingensief. She was awarded the title "Kammersängerin" in 2002 and received the Christel Goltz Prize (1999) and the German Theatre Prize Faust (2006). She appears on numerous CD and DVD recordings, including "Elektra", "Lohengrin" and "Die Frau ohne Schatten".

Following her debut at the 2002 Bayreuth Festival (as Brünnhilde), she has returned regularly as Kundry, Ortrud and Isolde ("Tristan und Isolde"). She appeared at the 2011 Salzburg Festival as the Dyer's Wife in "Die Frau ohne chatten", in 2017 as Goneril in "Lear" and in 2022 as Kabanicha in "Katja Kabanova". She sang Elektra at the Festival d'Aix and Nurse ("Die Frau ohne Schatten") at the Verbier Festival.

Previous appearances in Wiesbaden include Dyer's Wife in "Die Frau ohne Schatten" at the 2016 Internationale Maifestspiele, as well as Brünnhilde in the 2017 "Ring" cycle. She made her directing debut with a new production of "Fidelio" during the 2022/23 season.
