Rome 476 AD: the state's coffers are empty, the army is deserting, the Teutons are at the door, and the situation seems hopeless. But Emperor Romulus has other concerns, for instance that his laying hens are barely producing any eggs. His subjects, or at least those who are still there, are desperately looking for ways to escape the situation, and it seems almost everything goes: from an elaborate assassination plot to selling off the emperor's daughter to a rich magnate who could save Rome with his financial resources. Yet, Romulus refuses...
Friedrich Dürrenmatt fittingly did not classify his play "Romulus the Great" as a "pure" comedy, because the highly comical lines are also filled with great depth and subtlety.
