The number of national and international spa guests rose sensationally within a few years towards the end of the 19th century. Among them were many famous personalities, including Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner, who both lived and worked in Wiesbaden. The "World Spa City" soon became a glamorous place to be and be seen, with its leisure and cultural offerings completely geared towards the city's illustrious guests. Founded in 1896, the May Festival soon became an integral part of cultural life. During the warm season, the numerous festivals and concerts in the spa gardens also contributed to the entertainment of the guests.
