Verena Tönjes

Hailing vom Nordenham in Lower Saxony, mezzo-soprano Verena Tönjes is in demand both on the opera and concert stage. She studied opera at the Berlin College of the Arts under Prof. Albert Pesendorfer. Her Bachelor's studies took her to the Robert Schumann College of Music in Düsseldorf, where she studied with Profs. Konrad Jarnot and Stella Doufexis. In 2019, Verena Tönjes performed at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin the in world premiere of Chaya Czernowin's opera "Heart Chamber". Other roles include Cherubino (Bad Orb Opera Festival) and Hannah Pitt / Rabbih / Henry in Peter Eötvösʼ "Angels in America" (UdK Berlin).

She has been engaged at Staatstheater Mainz since the 2020/21 season, where she made her successful debut as Ramiro in "La Finta Giardiniera" and as Prince Orlofsky in "Die Fledermaus". Upcoming roles include Hansel, Dangeville in "Adriana Lecouvreur", and Brynhildur in the Icelandic opera "Gudruns Lied" by H. Tómasson.
