"Carmen" is still one of the most popular operas today, although the audience at its 1875 premiere initially reacted in shock. After all, Bizet elevated underprivileged, ordinary people - the fatally seductive gypsy Carmen and the deserting solider Don José - to the stars of the opera. Nevertheless, the opera began its triumphant march into the music history books, and over 140 years later, the work continues to fascinate audiences with its exotic world of smugglers, bullfighters, smoking and quarrelling factory workers, policemen, children and soldiers.
