In Molière's comedy "The Misanthrope", first performed in 1666, the virtuous Alceste strives for a society without hypocrisy, pretence and the double standards of aristocratic court society. The author originally added the words "The Melancholic in Love" to his published title, referring to a human component – love, against which not even the greatest misanthrope appears immune. Ulrich Matthes plays the role of Alceste in Anne Lenk's production for the Deutsches Theater Berlin.
