Jochen Schmeckenbecher

Jochen Schmeckenbecher is one of the leading exponents of the German-language repertoire, with roles such as Amfortas and Klingsor ("Parsifal"), Kurwenal ("Tristan und Isolde"), Music Master ("Ariadne auf Naxos"), Pizarro ("Fidelio"), Orest ("Elektra") as well as the title role in "Wozzeck". He has also enjoyed great success as Alberich ("Der Ring des Nibelungen") at the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim, the Vienna State Opera under Adam Fischer and Jeffrey Tate, the Frankfurt Opera under Sebastian Weigle, the Leipzig Opera under Ulf Schirmer and at the Tanglewood Festival under Andris Nelsons.

Guest engagements have taken him to the Wiener Staatsoper, the opera houses in Dresden, Munich and Stuttgart, Opera National de Paris, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, La Scala in Milan, the Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Real Madrid, Theater an der Wien, Volksoper Wien, to the Salzburg Festival as well as to opera houses in Dallas, Essen, Lyon, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Turin. On the concert stage, he could be heard as Bauer ("Gurrelieder"), Jesus ("Johannespassion") and in Beethoven's 9th Symphony. He has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston and Dallas Symphony Orchestras, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquesta Nacionales de España, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkünstler Orchestra and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.

Jochen Schmeckenbecher will grace the stage at the 2020 International May Festival as Faninal in "Der Rosenkavalier".
