Der Zigeunerbaron

The Gypsy Baron
Johann Strauss II (1825–1899)
Operetta in three acts
Sung in German
Libretto: Ignatz Schnitzer, based on the novella "Sáffi" by Mór Jókai
Premiere: 1885 in Vienna

After years of exile, Sandor Bárinkay returns to his father's estate to claim his inheritance, but unfortunately the pig farmer Zsupán already has his eye on the land. Barinaky's idea to marry Zsupán's daughter Arsena fails, because she can only marry someone of noble birth. But the gypsy Czipra has a plan...

The operetta "Der Zigeunerbaron" is one of Johann Strauss' greatest stage successes, along with "Die Fledermaus" and "Eine Nacht in Venedig". A story about never-ending wars, about values like bravery, loyalty and honesty - and about the mythical world and music of the Hungarian Roma.
