When Kara and Marek meet in an abandoned patch of forest, a strange silence falls around them. Empty villages, abandoned tanks and other things left behind by adults still bear witness to a civilisation that once existed here. Now apart from them, hardly anyone seems to stray into this inhospitable area. And so these two companions of fate roam the landscape in search of food and useful objects which they may be able to utilise in their new self-sufficient existence. But Kara has no intention of staying and her restlessness soon infects Marek as well. Together, they decide to set out for the Golden City which Kara has heard about, shining like a beacon of hope on the horizon. When a soldier asks to join them on their quest, Marek gradually discovers that it is not only curiosity that draws Kara to the city, but also a dark secret that haunts her and won't let her turn back.

Markolf Naujoks' "The Golden City" tells a fairytale adventure story about a world abandoned by adults, where children roam around in complete freedom and live according to their own rules. Themes such as war, loss, death and violence are at the centre of this uncompromising play. Despite all dangers and obstacles, the children take their own future firmly into their own hands.
