Driven by unwavering love and hope, Leonore risks everything to rescue her husband Florestan from death in a political prison. Yet Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera is much more than a simple portrayal of a self-sacrificing wife: Florestan's fate stands as a symbol for all the politically prosecuted of this world, those in the light and those in the dark. Beethoven goes far beyond the mere depiction of injustice: through Leonore, he sets out to challenge the ruling powers against the great force of humanity. The opera's deeply moving music, coupled with the composer's ideals of freedom, democracy and his own remarkable struggle against adversity, have continued to inspire people around the world for over 200 years.

Evelyn Herlitzius has embodied the role of Leonore all over the world. With "Fidelio", she makes her directorial debut at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden.
