Betsy Horne

Betsy Horne was born in California and studied in her home country as well as in Mainz, Germany. She made her first professional appearances at Cologne Opera, the Mainz State Theatre and at the Potsdam and Schwetzingen Festivals. Then still a mezzo, she became a member of the solo ensemble at the Wiesbaden State Theatre in 2006, where she worked until 2010. She later switched to the soprano fach, and won the Dorothea Glatt Award at the International Competition for Wagner Voices in Karlsruhe (2009), as well as the Bavarian Artistic Advancement Award in 2012.  From 2010 to 2014, she was an ensemble member at the Coburg Landestheater, where she enjoyed great success in roles such as Katja Kabanova, Desdemona ("Otello"), Agathe ("Der Freischütz"), Tatyana ("Eugene Onegin") and Elsa ("Lohengrin"). She made her USA debut in 2014 at the Spoleto Festival in the role of Katja Kabanova. In 2013 she made her debut as Marschallin ("Der Rosenkavalier") at the Klagenfurt Stadttheater, followed by Emma ("Khovanshchina") in 2015 at Theater Basel and the title role in "Arabella" in 2016 in Leipzig. After singing Freia ("Das Rheingold") during 2016/17 season, Betsy Horne returned to Wiesbaden in 2017/18 as Gutrune and Third Norn in "Götterdämmerung". She has since also graced the stage as Elisabeth ("Tannhäuser") and Eva in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". Following a period of maternity leave, Betsy Horne will return to Staatstheater Wiesbaden as Gräfin Mariza in June 2020.
