Nicolas Brieger was born and raised in Berlin. He started his career as theatre actor, and also appeared in television and film productions; his film “Welcome in Vienna” won praise at the film festival in Cannes. His work as director took him to theatres in Berlin, Basel, Bremen, Bochum, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Zurich, Stuttgart, Vienna’s Burgtheater and the Vienna Festival. Alongside Frank-Patrick Steckel, he directed the Bremer Schauspiel from 1978 to 1980, and from 1988 to 1992 he was Director of Drama at the National Theatre in Mannheim. His opera productions include, amongst others, the world premiere of Elliot Carter's “What next?” at the Berlin State Opera, “Der Barbier von Sevilla” in Brussels, “Katja Kabanova” in Leipzig, “Turandot” in Stuttgart, “Boulevard Solitude” by Henze, Hindemith’s “Cardillac” and Wolfgang Rihm’s “Die Eroberung von Mexiko” in Frankfurt. Other productions include “Simon Boccanegra” at the Paris Opera, “Idomeneo” in Vienna, Messiaen’s “Saint François d’Assise” in San Francisco, Kurt Weill’s “Royal Palace/Der Protagonist” at the Bregenz Festival, as well as Verdi’s “Otello” at the Hannover State Oper. His staging of Giovanni Legrenzi’s baroque opera “Il Giustino” for the Schwetzingen Festival was singled out by the magazine Opernwelt as rediscovery of the year. In the last few years, further projects include Busoni’s “Doktor Faust” at the Munich State Opera (for the opening of the opera festival), “Greek Passion” at the Zurich Opera House, “Così fan tutte” in Düsseldorf, Thomas Bernhard’s “Der Schein trügt” at Vienna’s Burgtheater, as well as “Salome” and “Conversation à Rechlin” at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Previous productions in Wiesbaden include the operas "La traviata", »Der Rosenkavalier« and "Don Giovanni", as well as the dramas »Hamlet« and "Nathan der Weise" . This season, he returns to Wiesbaden to direct "Wallenstein".
