Kangmin Justin Kim

Korean-American countertenor Kangmin Justin Kim is a graduate of the Northwestern University in Evanston (Illinois, USA) and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has won numerous international competitions and made his operatic debut in 2013 as Menelao in a production of Cavalli's "Elena" at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, followed by Orlofsky ("Die Fledermaus") in 2014/15 at the Opéra Comique, Sesto ("La clemenza di Tito") in Montpellier and Oreste ("La belle Hélène") at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. He was a member of the Heidelberg Opera ensemble during the 2015/16 season, with roles including Cherubino ("Le nozze di Figaro"), Aeneas in the German premiere of Leonardo Vinci's "Didone abbandonata" at the "Winter in Schwetzingen" Baroque Festival, as well as the specially-created title role in Johannes Kalitzke's world premiere "Pym".

He has since made his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Cherubino in "Le nozze di Figaro"), the Vienna State Opera (Henze's "Das verratene Meer"), Glyndebourne (Handel's "Giulio Cesare") and Theater an der Wien (Annio in "La clemenza di Tito"). In addition, he has appeared with the Berlin and Paris Philharmonic and has performed at the Festivals in Salzburg, Edinburgh and Lucerne (Nerone in "L'Incoronazione di Poppea").

Recent engagements include "Das verratene Meer" at the Vienna State Opera, Giacomelli's "La Merope" at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Nerone in "L'incoronazione di Poppea" at the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, Amanzio in "Il Giustino", Hyacinthus in "Apollo et Hyacinthus" and Ruggiero in "Orlando furioso" at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Ruggiero in "Alcina" in Brno, Caen and Versailles and the title role in the world premiere "M. Butterfly" at the Santa Fe Opera. In addition, he sang Hansel in "Hansel and Gretel" at Dallas Opera.

Previous roles in Wiesbaden include Hamor in "Jephtha", Idamante in "Idomeneo" and Gingerbread Witch in "Hänsel und Gretel".
