A lonely woman withers away in a dark 19th century landlord's world and is ultimately driven to murder. "Lady Macbeth" is one of the great music theatre works of the 20th century and was to be Shostakovich's last opera: Stalin's displeasure swiftly silenced the brilliant music dramatist, famously banning the opera in the Soviet Union for almost thirty years. After two successful productions in Wiesbaden, Russian director Evgeny Titov returns with his first foray in opera. GMD Patrick Lange conducts, while Swedish soprano Cornelia Beskow takes on the demanding title role.
