Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750)
Staged oratorio
Sa, 08.02.2020
Grosses Haus19:30
First performed on Good Friday in 1727, the St Matthew Passion had been forgotten for over 100 years until Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy performed in again in 1829. Scored for two orchestras and two choirs, Bach's powerful setting of the Passion of Jesus Christ is celebrated as a musical masterpiece today. Johanna Wehner's staging brings an exciting new scenic realisation of Bach's famous work to the stage. Winner of the "Faust" Theatre Prize, Wehner already displayed her affinity for atmospheric tableaux and fundamental human questioning with the world premiere of "Schönerland". Baroque specialist Konrad Junghänel conducts this momentous work, filled with large choirs and emotionally charged solos.
