Oleg Caetani

Oleg Caetani has conducted all over the world, from La Scala in Milan to the Mariinsky in Saint Petersburg, the Royal Opera House in London, San Francisco Opera, Lincoln Center in New York, Suntory Hall in Tokyo and the Sydney Opera House. He regularly works with orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Radio France, the Mozarteum Orchestra, the Konzerthaus Orchestra in Berlin, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, l'Accademia di Santa Cecilia and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, amongst others. He has collaborated with soloists such as Martha Argerich, Sviatoslav Richter, Daniil Trifonov, Vadim Repin, Misha Maiisky, Gauteri Capuçon, Viktoria Mullova and Emmanuel Pahud.

Caetani considers Nadia Boulanger to be one of the early driving forces of his career. Other mentors include Franco Ferrara and Irma Ravinale with whom he studied conducting and composition at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Music in Rome. After studying with Kiril Kondrashin at the Moscow Conservatory, he graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a student of Ilya Mussin. As winner of the RAI Turin competition in 1979 and Karajan Competition in Berlin in 1982, he started his career at the Berlin State Opera “Unter den Linden” as repetiteur and assistant to Otmar Suitner. He later became principal conductor of the Weimar Staatskapelle, first Kapellmeister at the Frankfurt Opera, as well as GMD in Wiesbaden and Chemnitz.

In 2001, he made his La Scala debut with "Turandot", followed by "Otello" in 2005. He opened the 2001 season of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with "Don Pasquale" and conducted "Khovanshchina" at English National Opera in 2003. In 2001, he made his debut with the Melbourne Symphone Orchestra and later became principal conductor and artistic director there from 2005 - 2009.

Shostakovich's music plays a central role in Caetani's repertoire. His dicography includes prize-winning recordings of the complete symphonies with the LaVerdi Orchestra in Milan, as well as the symphonies of Tasman (Chandos) and Gounod (CPO), both of which won Diapason d’Or awards.

Recent engagements include "Khovanchina", Vaughan Williams' "Sir John In Love", "Madama Butterfly", "La Boheme" and "Tosca" at English National Opera, "Der fliegende Holländer" at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, "L'enfant et les sortilèges" at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, "Don Carlo" in Cologne, and "Madama Butterfly" in Berlin and Oslo. He made his debut at the Royal Opera in Covent Garden with "Tosca" and conducted "Lady Macbeth of the Mzensk District« in Oslo and Helsinki.
