Rodrigo Porras Garulo

Born in Mexico City, tenor Rodrigo Porras Garulo studied singing at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under Kammersängerin Helene Schneiderman and privately with Antonio Carangelo. He also received further training from Barbara Bonney, Josef Protschka, Markus Eiche, Enza Ferrari, Jean-Pierre Fabre, Eike Grams and Maris Skuja, amongst others. He was an ensemble member at Staatstheater Meininger from 2010 to 2015, where his roles included Alfredo in "La Traviata", Duca in "Rigoletto", Tamino in "Die Zauberflöte", Claudio in Wagner's early work "Das Liebesverbot" and Jacopo Foscari in "I Due Foscari". He moved to Staatstheater Karlsruhe in 2017, where he has sung roles such as Don José in "Carmen", Cavaradossi in "Tosca", Maurizio in "Adriana Lecouvreur", and Alfredo and Gabriele Adorno in Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra". Guest engagements include Turiddu in "Cavalleria Rusticana" at the first Sochi Festival in Russia, Duca at Opéra de Tours, Don José at Theater Koblenz, Aladin in the opera of the same name by Nino Rota at Oper Leipzig, the title role in "Der Zarewitsch" at the Dresden State Operetta and Walter von der Vogelweide in "Tannhäuser" at the Wartburg Festival Hall. He is a prize laureate of the International Antonín Competition Dvořák and a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Association.
Highlights of the 2018/19 season include his debut as Rodolfo in "Luisa Miller" conducted by Julia Jones and directed by Barbora Horáková Joly at the Wuppertal Oper, Pinkerton in "Madama Butterfly" for the re-opening of the Théatre Nebia Biel, as well as the Karlsruhe Opera Gala of "Tosca" alongside Martina Serafin and Lucio Gallo. This season, he makes his La Scala debut as Duca alongside Leo Nucci, and also sings the title role in "The Tales of Hoffmanns" in Karlsruhe. In addition, he will sing Cavaradossi and make house debuts at the Staatsoper Hannover and at the re-opening of the Prague State Opera. Role debuts in Karlsruhe include Max in "Der Freischütz" and Calaf in "Turandot".
