Günther Groissböck

After completing his vocal training in Vienna, Austrian bass Günther Groissböck was immediately engaged at the Vienna State Opera, after which he later moved to the Zurich Opera House. He has been freelancing since 2007 and is now one of the most sought-after basses on the opera circuit, regularly gracing the stages of the most important opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Milan's La Scana, Opéra National de Paris, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper and Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin. Major roles include Sarastro ("Die Zauberflöte"), Vodník ("Rusalka"), Gurnemanz ("Parsifal"), Banco ("Macbeth"), Heinrich der Vogler ("Lohengrin") and Fasolt, Fafner and Hunding (Wagner's "Ring"). He made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2014 in the role of Baron Ochs in "Der Rosenkavalier", a role which he also performed in spring 2018 alongside Renée Fleming and Elina Garanca at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the acclaimed Robert Wilson production, which is still playing as part of the UCI Cinema programme. He made his Bayreuth Festival debut in 2011 as Hermann ("Tannhäuser") and performed Pogner ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg") there in 2017. Following his appearance as Sarastro at the 2017 International May Festival, he returned to the 2019 edition of the Festival to grace the stage as Pogner in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg".
