Paul Kaufmann

Paul Kaufmann was born in Halle/Saale. After attending the Musikspezialschule Halle, he worked as a composer and arranger at the Apron Theatre in his home town from 1999 to 2004, where he composed a large number of stage scores. During this time, he also studied singing with Prof. Roland Schubert at the Leipzig University of Music and Theatre.

After a two-year scholarship from the Franz-Josef-Weisweiler Foundation, he became a permanent ensemble member at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the 2006/07 season, with roles including Don Basilio ("Le nozze di Figaro"), 1st Armoured Man, Monostatos and 2nd Priest ("Die Zauberflöte"), Nando ("Tiefland"), Steuermann ("Der fliegende Holländer"), Brighella ("Ariadne auf Naxos"), Remendado ("Carmen"), 1st and 2nd Jew ("Salome"), Der Bucklige ("Die Frau ohne Schatten"), Valzacchi, Wirt ("Der Rosenkavalier"), Mime ("Das Rheingold") and David ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg").

Guest appearances have taken him to he Komische Oper and Staatsoper Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, the Leipzig Opera, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Municipal Santiago de Chile, the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Toulouse, Lyon and Strasbourg as well as at the Bayreuth Festival.
