Only the Duke's jester is allowed to tell the ruler the truth to his face - and he does so with sharp-tongued gusto, at everyone else's expense. Nevertheless, she ends up losing her heart to the vicious Duke and, when Rigoletto vows to take revenge, she sacrifices herself for the lecherous man.
