Only the Duke's jester is allowed to tell the ruler the truth to his face - and he does so with sharp-tongued gusto, at everyone else's expense. At the same time he is presumptuous enough to believe that he can keep his own little world free from all evils, protecting his daughter Gilda at all costs. Nevertheless, she ends up losing her heart to the vicious Duke and, when Rigoletto vows to take revenge, she sacrifices herself for the lecherous man. In a world where love is synonymous with manipulation, people are crushed. With the genial "La Donna è mobile" (Woman is fickle) Verdi finally secured his world fame.
