Will Humburg

Will Humburg studied with Horst Stein and Christoph von Dohnányi in his home city of Hamburg, followed by first engagements in Bremen and Hagen. He quickly established himself as a sought-after guest conductor during the mid-1980s, with numerous opera and concert appearances in Germany and abroad.

As General Music Director in Münster from 1992-2004, he conducted Wagner's “Ring”, amongst others. He stepped in for Giuseppe Sinopoli’s “Siegfried” and “Götterdämmerung” at short notice in Rome, and has since conducted many operas in the Italian capital. His enigmatic interpretations and wide-ranging repertoire – spanning more than 120 music theatre works and almost all of the great symphonic titles – make him a much sough-after conductor for operatic productions and on the concert podium. Guest engagements have taken him to opera houses and festivals such as La Scala in Milan, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Semperoper in Dresden, Stuttgart, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Budapest, Lisbon, Düsseldorf, Palermo, Menorca Opera Festival, Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, Verdi Festival Busseto Munich and Seville.

Will Humburg has been a permanent guest conductor at the Bonn Opera House since 2008, where he initiated a very successful series of early Verdi operas, amongst other projects. He has also been a regular guest at Cologne Opera since 2009, where he has conducted several productions of late Verdi operas, in addition to Wagner's "Parsifal". He was Artistic Director and Principal Conductor at the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania from 2009 to 2011 and was General Music Director of Staatstheater Darmstadt from 2014 to 2018.
