Things cannot really get worse this Christmas at Belinda and Neville Bunker's house. Like every other year, they are planning a good, traditional, middle-class Christmas, where an effort is made to nip conflicts in the bud and meaningful looks are preferred over the complexity of words. The Christmas roast is well under way in the oven and the presents are waiting under the tree. But things begin to fall apart when uncle Harvey and Bernard start and argument, Neville's sister ruins Christmas dinner under the influence of alcohol and her husband obsesses about rehearsing his dismal puppet show. When good-looking Clive walks into the room and garners attention from all the ladies, it's only a matter of time before a big showdown ensues - and under Ayckbour's watch this showdown is nothing less than legendary.

Sir Alan Ayckbourn, who celebrated his 80th birthday in April 2019, is one of the best-known living playwrights of our time. His well over 70 plays, mainly comedies, are performed all over the world and many have inspired film adaptations. Ayckbourn has received numerous awards, including the Laurence Olivier Special Award and the Special Tony Award for his life's work.
