Closely related to Faust, Wagner's Tannhäuser seems to carry two souls in his chest. Both courageous and rebellious, he is desperately seeking to cross a border, to make a breakthrough, while as an artist he also yearns to be accepted into Wartburg society. Which is the road to "salvation"? The pilgrimage to Rome or a return to Venusberg? Does the journey require a detour, perhaps a more rebellious approach - or should we simply be following the chosen path? For all its "Tannhäuser" conflicts, the world seems to need a miracle to let the the pilgrim's staff thrive once again.
