German-British conductor Alexander Joel studied in Vienna. He was First Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf/Duisburg from 2001 to 2007, followed by a position as General Music Director in Braunschweig from 2007 to 2014, where he focused greatly on German repertoire. He is a regular guest in Gent and Antwerp, appearing in both operatic productions as well as on the podium for symphony concerts. His prolific international career includes appearances at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, WDR Radio Orchestra in Cologne, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Montpellier National Orchestra and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Recent operatic projects include appearances at the Royal Opera House in London, where he is a regular guest ("Carmen"), Boston ("The Merry Widow"), Zurich and Berlin ("Turandot") and Hamburg ("La Traviata"). In addition, he conducted "Die lustige Witwe" at the Volksoper in Vienna, "Carmen" in Stockholm and "Luisa Miller" at the English National Opera. Previous engagements in Wiesbaden include the complete "Ring" cycle in a single season, "La Bohéme", "Il Trovatore" and a symphony concert. He returned to Wiesbaden in 2020/21 to conduct a new production of Puccini's "Il trittico". This season, he will conduct a new production of "Il Trovatore".
