Vassilis Christopoulos

Born in Munich, Vassilis Christopoulos studied oboe and music theory at the Athens Conservatory and orchestral conducting at the “Hochschule für Musik” in Munich. He was Artistic Director of the Athens State Orchestra from 2011 to 2014, and from 2005 to 2015 Chief Conductor of the South-West German Philharmonic Orchestra of Constance. With this orchestra, he performed widely in Germany, Italy, Austria, Greece, France and Japan. He has been regular guest conductor at the Greek National Opera in Athens since 1999 and has led operatic productions in France, the Czech Republic and Germany. He has conducted the NDR Radio Philharmonic, the State Philharmonic of Nuremberg, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bremen Philharmonic. He made his debut with the German Radio Philharmonic in the 2015/16 season. In 1999 he was named "Young Musician of the Year" by the Greek Society of Music and Theatre Critics and in 2000 he won the 1st Bad Homburg Conducting Prize. In 2013, he was named "Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres". In 2016, he took up a position as professor of conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt. During the 2015/16 season in Wiesbaden, he conducted a symphony concert as well as the opera "Elektra". This season, he is returns to the podium to conduct "Die Frau ohne Schatten".
