Volker Hintermeier

Volker Hintermeier studied costume and stage design at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and worked as head of design at Schauspielhaus Bochum from 2000 to 2005. In 2002, he designed "Deutschland Deine Lieder", the opening production of the Ruhrtriennale. From 2005 to 2009, he worked as head stage designer at Schauspielhaus Zurich. He has created sets for operatic productions at the Zurich Opera House ("Carmen", "The Bartered Bride", Eugen d'Albert's "Tiefland"), at the Vienna State Opera (Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth von Mzensk"), at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and at the Mikhailovsky Theatre St. Petersburg. For the 2007 Salzburg Festival he designed the stage for Shakespeare's "Ein Sommernachtstraum" and in 2014 for Karl Kraus' "Die letzten Tage der Menschheit". He also regularly works at the Vienna Burgtheater, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Staatstheater Stuttgart and Deutsche Theater Berlin. In addition, he has designed sets for the Kammerspiele München, Schauspiel Leipzig, Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, Schauspiel Köln, Volkstheater Wien, Theater in der Josefstadt, Theater Basel and Staatstheater Dresden. He has worked with Jürgen Kruse and Martin Laberenz for many years, and regularly collaborates with director Johanna Wehner. Other collaborations include Armin Petras, Matthias Hartmann, Volker Schlöndorff, Niels-Peter Rudolph, Georg Schmiedleitner and Helge Schneider. He has received several nominations in the "Best Stage Design" category of the "Theater heute" critics survey. He made his Wiesbaden debut with the world premiere production of the opera "Schönerland" in 2017/18 and also designed "Kabale und Liebe" in 2018/19. This season, he returns to design the sets for the scenic realisation of Bach's "St Matthew Passion", directed by Johanna Wehner.
