Don Carlos is based on the dramatic play »Don Carlos, Infante of Spain« (1784) by Friedrich Schiller, in which the Marquis of Posa addresses King Philip with the subversive words »Sire, grant us the freedom of thought!«. This inner fire is also reflected in the energetic, forward-pushing music of Verdi's opera.
